About Us

St. Finbarrs National Hurling and Football Club has a long and proud history. In the early 1800’s, a team of men from the parish of St.Finbarrs played hurling and were well known, far and wide, for their prowess on the field of play.  In the early days the Parish stretched from Blackrock to the Bandon Road near the Viaduct and was the next Parish to Ballinora.  In 1821 Blackrock became a Parish and in 1882 the Lough Parish was formed from the western side of the original St.Finbarrs, hence the name St.Finbarrs West Parish.

It would appear, from our records, that, at this time, the members of the St.Finbarrs team were living within a mile radius of Phairs Cross, some in the Lough Parish and some in the South Parish.  The GAA was founded in 1884 and in 1886 the members decided at a General meeting to form an official club under the rules of the GAA.

In 1956 the Club decided to purchase ground in Togher, and so began our association with this parish.  The Club Building was erected in 1970.

Over the years we have won every Championship competition organised by Cork County Board, with the exception of Junior Football.

We have also won Senior Provincial and All Ireland Club Championships in Hurling and Football.

We are the only GAA club in the Country to have won the All Ireland Club Championship, in both Hurling and Football.

In GAA Centenary year, 1984, we were adjudged the AIB GAA Club of the Year.

At present we promote and play the outdoor games of Hurling, Gaelic Football and Camogie.  We cater for persons from 5 years of age to Adult. The children are introduced to our games by the Street League Committee and Coaches, and presently we have around 300 children. They remain at Street League level playing non competitive games and learning the skills until 11 years of age when they transfer to the Under Age Section where they commence to play competitively.  At age 16 they transfer to the Minor Committee who look after their interests until they complete their 18th year when they graduate to the Senior Section.

To cater for all this activity we have 2 sand based pitches, 1 grass pitch and and 1 astro surface training ground.  One of the sand pitches and the astro pitch has flood lights. We also have an outdoor Hurling Wall, and an indoor Hurling Alley.  We have 10 dressing rooms to cater for the players.

We also promote and play the indoor games of Handball, Racquet Ball, Squash  and Short Mat Bowls.  Our Healthy Club Committee organise regular weekly fitness sessions and we have a Gym to cater for our members.

On the Social side, we have an excellent and comfortable Bar area with facilities to provide food. We can cater for all family occasions and our excellent staff are efficient and friendly.

Anybody who wishes to join our Club, either as a Player, a  Social member or as a voluntary helper on any of our Committees, will be more than welcome.
